Property Summary

Expect the unexpected here. There are endless possibilities for the vast living space in this wonderful property in the heart of Evercreech. The Old Stores is an interesting, distinctive house, formerly the village stores, with very large rooms and a host of original Victorian features and characterful relics from its former life as a shop. The house has benefited from stylish renovation but still has some ‘unfinished business’ and scope for further improvement.

There are two front doors; the central door sits between two large shop windows and opens into a huge, light filled studio/living space with a high ceiling and its original, chequered, shop floor tiles. A wall of open shelving partitions the space. Through to the back is a generous storage room and a large utility room in a trendy industrial style, with a double sink, copious shelving and lots of space for washing machine/tumble dryer and more.  The original frosted window with steel bars and wide bolted door leading outside are reminiscent of ‘the back of the shop’. There is also a loo on the ground floor, which houses the original cast iron shop safe and a lovely old fireplace.

Stairs lead up to the first floor.  On this level is a large, stylish kitchen, fitted with Ikea units in dark grey with wooden work surfaces, a fresh white ceramic double sink, a five ring gas hob, integrated double ovens and dishwasher and a woodblock floor.  A double-glazed stable door, large sash window and a pretty tiny window all look out to the garden.  There is room for a large dining table here too.  Leading off from the kitchen is a small study, with painted floorboards and a blackboard wall, and a shower room.

The huge drawing room, with three original Victorian tall arched sash windows, has a wonderful view of the church and the heart of the village.  The easterly aspect enjoys the morning sunshine.

On the top floor are four large double bedrooms and the family bathroom.  The master bedroom has a tiny secret door in the corner which leads through to another of the bedrooms.  Another bedroom has a large, deep linen cupboard backing onto the bathroom, which could make an additional shower room.  There is a capacious, boarded, loft space, offering potential for yet more living space - with more than enough room in the bathroom for a third staircase.

A steel ‘fire escape’ style staircase leads down from the kitchen to a very large, walled garden.  A decking area under the trees is perfect for dining alfresco.  The extensive lawn is bordered by mature shrubs and trees, and a picket fence separates the vegetable garden, with six raised beds, a greenhouse and a summerhouse. There is an old stone outbuilding with a flagstone floor and a cast iron stove, and an adjoining outside loo - in full working order!  There is also a huge henhouse, a Wendy house and a pond.  Gaining access into the rear of the garden for parking is a strong possibility.

Evercreech is a busy little village and is well serviced with a local store, post office, pharmacy, bakery, art gallery and an active village hall which hosts numerous monthly events. It is only a ten-minute drive to the fashionable town of Bruton which has several well known restaurants, pubs and bars inclcuding 'At the Chapel' and 'The Roth Bar' and the world renowned Hauser & Wirth Gallery. Castle Cary is a short drive away, again offering many restaurants and individual boutiques.

There is Evercreech Church of England VC Primary School for children aged 5-11 and also the Acorn Pre-School.  Nearby is Sexeys, a state-run boarding/day school, and Kings Bruton and Bruton School for girls. Ansford State secondary in Castle Cary, All Hallows Prep, Downside, Wells Cathedral, Millfield and Strode College are all within easy reach, along with the Bath schools.

Transport links are excellent - nearby Castle Cary has a mainline train to London Paddington  (1 hr 50 mins), Templecombe station is under 30 mins away and has a mainline train to Waterloo. Bruton also offers a line to London via Westbury.
